Spuzz. You mention Custer. He's from Monroe Michigan and there was a protest there to move his statue. Not an Indian in sight that I could see just a bunch of "woke" housewives. People are going absolutely crazy with this stuff. Custer lost for God's sake! But they did name a delicious frozen treat after him, Frozen Custer.

Saw an article today about possble names for the Indians. My favorite was the Cleveland Colavito's. In reference to the great Indian right fielder Rocky Colavito.

Or maybe the Cleveland Feller's?

scotts33 If anyone finds something wrong in the name of the Cleveland Browns, they really do need to be put away, or just killed off 😂 . THAT is going way overboard, when that name is from Paul Brown; nothing to do with any 'humans'.

Am waiting for a public response from the Crayola company, any day now. Should be a news conference being set up.

I can't wait til someone around here starts some shit. Buffalo Bill is from nearby, and they have a museum and such for him. Then, this whole area is "Blackhawk" country, home of the Sauk & Fox Nation. Parks/museum, banks, hotels, etc. carry his name. There was even a NBA Pro basketball team here named the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, before they moved to Milwaukee. Here's a pic of a mural, facing the Mississippi, in Rock Island. They start defacing things here, trying to tear things down, I might have a bit of a problem with the brakes on my truck.

ode this topic is hardly new. High Schools and colleges have been changing the name and/or mascot for decades, you just don't hear about it because there isn't as much $ involved and tends to be locally covered vs. nationally

Our local high school is now in the middle of feeling the pressure. Their mascot is The Rebels. I was chosen when my old high school and two smaller schools merged. They let the kids choose the name. I always thought is was a dumb choice because The Rebels is a southern name and here we are in Minnesota, far from the south. I would have preferred that they remained The Wildcats as the local school always was. There wouldn't be a controversy now if they would have left it that way.

But, just maybe, the kids were honoring James Dean? Or, are they flying the confederate flag too? (I'm just trying to justify the reasoning.)

Did any of you know of schools that had team names that would be obviously bad now?
In central Illinois is the town of Pekin. Apparently because it was like Peking, they were the Pekin Chinks. It was that way when I was still in high school.

My current town still has the Redskins. My wife grew up in a different Redskins town, and they have changed to the Redhawks.

I like the one about the Wops. I'm Italian so maybe I can post it. (One time my cousin said something about being a Dago, and my grandma turned white and read him the riot act. Times change and then they change some more.)

Apparently the scariest thing they could think of was a horde of Catholic Italians pillaging the prairies. For a mascot they, and I’m not kidding, a dude running around with a purple sheet over his head with eye holes cut out, a sort of purple KKK anti-Italian outfit.

Spuzz Nothing derogatory in either of those names. However, it would be with any mascot depicting said names; mascot would have to go, much as the Fighting Illini's had to go. And my high school mascot also got the ax, iirc, but name remains. Warriors!! Most times it's not so much the name, but what is representing that name. My name is Rex, so I try not to disparage the canine community(VERY large segment of the population, btw), by pissing on things when out for a walk. Nor would I ever shit in someone's yard.

My high school (Kecoughtan) was named after the Indian tribe that inhabited that area (Hampton, VA) when settlers arrived in 1609. Our team name is Warriors. I'm sure someone is offended.
