I followed the posts by one of our old FGI's Bernie Baymiller on FGI for years AKA Longstick. He might be one of the first supporters of long and light drivers for seniors. Bernie was a very accomplished golfer and started promoting longer and lighter drivers before they were offered on the market. When the 175g drivers first came out I started playing the DTG 175 with a 45g shaft at 47" and had great success with it for almost two seasons. My game went to total crap a few years ago and I got away from the 175 for some reason and it has been in the closet. Not having much success with my other "normal" drivers I got the 175 back out last week and had a super driving day.
Earlier in the week I was taking apart a Cally GBB Epic I had been tinkering with a heavier slider weight and when weighing stuff I noticed that the Cally head without the slider weight was 175g. Hmmm, that head weight seems familiar. Also, I bought the Cally for the head since it came with an A flex Diamana 40g shaft. I tried it when I got it and it was super noodly. At then end of season last fall I extended the Diamana A flex out to play at 47" in a spare DTG 175 head and it played well. Going to long with a light head requires going a softer flex or two to get the shaft to load. The light bulb clicked that putting the Diamana back in the Cally head at 175g without the slider weight might work. So today I played the Cally at 47" and it was absolutely wonderful. I got about 20 yards farther than the DTG shaft and either dead straight or a 5 yard fade. I am close to being back up with my buds. And there is no swing change required for me. The length seems perfect. I am surprised that the longer/light never caught on. I think most never built the club with the proper flex shaft.
Anywho, Bernie past on several years ago. Bernie your ideas are still alive. And, a long and light Cally BBG Epic? Who knew? :
