Finally got some decent range time with this demo head shafted up with Accra XT75 at ~ 44.5". The shaft is an M3, but I tipped it closer to an M4 and had previously used it in a Ping G25 and Cally XR16 with very good results. I weighed this head at only 197g which is too light for me so I slapped on some lead tape to get it up to ~ 205g. It maybe could still use another couple of grams, but 205-208 usually works for me.
So first off this is a pretty nice looking head from Golfworks. GW is always great quality IMO, but not always the best looking. This head looks good. I've always loved Maltby irons, but I've never been too happy with their woods. I did have a CT250 driver that was a nice low bullet hitter and I had a KE4 V driver that was a great performer, but otherwise their woods have been disappointing. This head is NOT disappointing. I hit it against a Rogue and an Epic Flash and it more than held its own. To be honest, with a bit more time and tweaking I might like this one better.
The feel/sound are pretty good. Not great, but I haven't tried a driver head recently that's wowed me with feel/sound. I think the Rogue is awful and the Epic Flash is not so good either. I think I like the KE4 better. Of course That could also have been the 8g of lead tape I had on it. I swear lead tape can improve the sound. The ballflight and forgiveness were similar to the Rogue and I think the Rogue is very forgiving. I hit a # of shots of the toe and they went out there decently. Like the Rogue, playing with the settings didn't change much for me. I mainly hit a little fade and if I really concentrated I could hit a draw. I think the KE4 hit higher, but that could be shaft as the Rogue 10.5* has an Accra FX370 M4. The Epic Flash is a 9* and hits lower still so maybe not the best comparison. I find the Flash a bit hotter on center strikes, but not as forgiving off the toe which is my miss. I also think I could use more loft on the Flash to maximize distance when I'm not swinging as well. Yesterday I was swinging very well and hitting all 3 drivers nicely so the Flash was longer with a bit more roll, but on an "average" day I would go for more loft.
I haven't tried a lot of drivers recently so I can't say how it compares to all of them. The last Ping driver I owned was a G30 so it's been awhile. I have tried my buddies' M5 and M6 and I like those; I don't think they perform any better, but at least they are very (maybe too much) muted so almost no sound IMO. I've heard the new Mavrik, Tour Edge and Ping are great performers, but I have not gone for a fitting in awhile and probably will not go soon. I think this Maltby head is the real deal and I would game it. I'm impressed and if I decide to build a set of clubs soon it could wind up being Golfworks irons and a driver.
