Iron Loft Question

I am looking for iron models that have a 38* loft for the 8 iron. Age is not a factor. Anybody know where I can look or if you know any. Thanks, Chuck

scotts33 . If swing weight was the correct way to heft match wouldn't the wedges be the same letter/number?

Could it be that someone discovered a slightly higher SW helps players hit their wedges better? Just guessing here. I have noticed the OEMs producing lighter SWs in newer offerings. PING has always done so. Scott, do you know if any OEMs use MOI matching?

If that is true then MoI heft matching makes sense as clubs get shorter they get a heavier head "feel".

Major brands can not offer MoI heft matching it would cost to much to make it true custom. As, stated in my previous post industry is stuck and tied with swing weight, 1/2" length graduation, 7g head weight increase because of cost/labor. That's my opinion. Not that's it's right or wrong you choose. I offer my clients choices and IMO that's good. It's not my way or the highway.

I don't think this is all that true any longer. There are some very weird lengths being put out by most OEMs. And they aren't necessarily in the 1/2 graduations. Some of these clubs are just too long now, yet are still using the same old(standard) lie angles. And that makes no sense, and a lot of shanks.

Par4QC I am speaking of irons Rex not hybrids and woods. Other than SL everyone else is stuck in irons at 1/2". Plus major brands manufacture playing length in frwy woods and hybrids too long for the majority. It's fit your swing to our equipment not the other way around which is what it should be. 😁

Par4QC that’s the whole point. Most players today(excluding the very tall) use much too upright lie angles. I play my irons a half inch longer than years past but I flatten my lies to accommodate. I also play my irons longer than the 6 a bit forward in my stance. I like my wedges a bit heavier swing weight than the irons but I almost never take a full blown swing with a wedge. I like a short smooth swing with a wedge letting head weight and swing length control distance. I have no problem with a 0 offset blade 2 iron. It’s the proper lie, smooth full swing with the ball a bit forward and let the club work. The minute you try to “ kill” it your done.

Please post some links. I'd like to see what major brands are doing as I haven't kept up on this going away from 1/2" length graduation Thanks.

scotts33 Callaway has longer lengths in mainly their 4,5,6 irons. Taylormade has gone up 1/4"- 1/2" and not a constant gapping, and I know from fondling them in stores, that has affected the lie angles. I've got a set of RBladez here, Jake's, that are even that much longer. They come out in 2012. PING has also increased their long irons by 1/4".

I do realize, of course, the reason. Those long iron lofts are so low, most of the 4i now have lofts even lower than the old 2i had. 4 irons now look like some putters. 🤣

I'll start another thread explaining why industry trend is upright lie angles and closed face angle drivers. Or do I need to? 😁

Define standardized and proper. Every6ones swing is unique. If the OEMs can make a driver that helps correct the most common faults, it will sell.

sdandrea1 I guess what I mean is that a set of clubs on the rac or for sale online should have a 5 iron that’s 38 inches long, about 26 to 28 loft and 60, 61 degree lie. That accommodates the majority of grab and go customers and gives the fitter a base to start at. I took my son in law to second swing( he’s6’3). He was determined to get fit for big name clubs. The guy just kept putting heads on shafts and handing him clubs to hit. I finally butted in and told the guy to try a more upright lie. The guy had a couple heads at 2 degrees upright. After hitting a few balls better( all the demo irons were 7 irons which I don’t agree with, most can do ok with any 7 iron) I asked him if both irons had the same lie. He said yes, they are both 2 up. I said 2 up of what? He looked at me like I was crazy. Another question I have is a fitter responsible to fit clubs to a reasonable sound swing or just give a crooked man a crooked cane and send him on his way? The average golfer doesn’t know an inkling of what the guys in this group know, they’re at these people’s mercy.

Oh, yes, agree. The OEMs, and shaft manufacturers each make their own standards. There's no equal baseline to build from.

they could even settle on measuring torque standards let alone shaft flex standards. Each designer and engineer has what they would call a standard in their head.
