I've used skinflints for as long as I can remember. Had no idea where it came from:
"miser, one who makes use of contemptible economy to keep money," 1700, slang; literally "kind of person who would skin a flint to save or gain something," from skin (v.) + flint.
Dates back to the 1800's with peak useage around 1900. I need to upgrade my vocabulary.
