WARNING: Long winded agreement on going to SGI for the enjoyment of the game follows:
Iām going back to SGI this year. Years ago, DTG had a SGI club they sent a demo out on, it was impossible to miss, even though I fought the shaft that was not a real fit for me. I got acceptable results virtually every shot.
After tinkering around, that lead me to buying the Wishon 870ti that was pretty awesome, just point and shoot. I had great luck with the long irons, but really struggled to refine the short irons. It was almost like I had a better shot at sticking one close with the 6iron than the PW, generally had the right distance, rarely the flight or direction I intended. It was like trying to do surgery with a machete.
It eventually lead me to go to the Callaway fitting range on a trip to Vegas and I was going to buy the X-Hots, but got talked into the Pro model. The pro has a less rounded leading edge and higher CG, though generally thought to be better for my type of game, and now I struggle with the same thing most people do, Iām just not good enough after the 8 iron. I feel ok with the 7 and kicked the 6 on up out of the bag in exchange for the Pinhawk 5 iron, which gives me pretty close to my 6 iron distance if I back off a little and almost a full 5 iron if I get after it. Honestly, If itās windy (which in WNY it ALWAYS was), I used it to flight down my 7 iron shots and had better results with that too.
I am going to sell the XHP and replace them with a single or dual length set this year. Key qualifications will be rounded leading edge, forgiving design and ideally somebody else invested the money in the graphite shafts I need šbecause I donāt want to pay for them.
As of this moment, Pinhawks, Vertex and the description of the design of the new Wishon SL/DL set has my eye. I worry the Vertex might be a little too high launching and I know the Pinhawks are super solid for me, but also not as long as the irons Iām used to in a pretty significant way, so letās call it a mental hurdle. When the Wishon hits we will see what the end decision becomes. No rush, because I have 10,000 other things on my plate, but thatās just my life/style I guess. More golf, less chaos is the āplanā for this year. Now to execute.
