LBlack14 I only see this when playing behind old men. Cheapassed, old, men!! If walking, they always walk along the woods, instead of down the fw towards their ball. If riding, they will veer along the woods and even cross the fw to any water there may be; jump off the cart and start fishing if they see something. They need hell beat outta them.

Ball hawking cost this man his life.

This happened a couple of months ago. East Lake has two very nice courses (North and South). It’s private and I’ve played there several times with a guy who was a member.

I only ball hawk my own ball. In our previous large group and in our current foursome guys ball hawk if they’re out of the hole. A good ball hawker doesn’t slow down play. 😉

Disclaimer: about 90% of my play is either in league play (two leagues) or in outings with members of those leagues. In the last 7 or 8 years, there's only been one member who had a ball retriever - so my experiences, and therefore qualifications to judge, are limited. This one individual, however, definitely, routinely, noticeably, slowed down play. His "ball hawking" would have slowed down play regardless of owning a ball retriever (we only have two locations where a ball and water might reasonably meet) as he looks in tall grass and scouts wooded areas just as fervently. If they made a metal detector which would trigger alarms for Surlyn and/or urethane ... he would have had one in his bag. Oddly enough ... he is not at all a "cheapass". He gives away 90% of the balls he finds to those who use the brand found, and is very free with money. I think it is more of a challenge? Probably one of the most liked guys in either group. Just not the guy you want going off in the first pairing.

No fishing the big pond, as it's in the way, but down the outsides, no problem.
There is a member at the local 9 holer I joined for a year that does this late in the day.
Donates to the junior golfers there.

I can’t tell you the last time I bought golf balls, apparently I just follow Steve around the course. I usually stumble upon 6+ a round and I’m not looking for them. I throw them in the bag and hit them when the time calls for it. I have a lot of NIB balls that I always tell myself I will burn through, just never seem to need them. The funny part is, I find more damn Pro-v1s than anything.

I probably should preface this, I usually play with my wife or other friends who really suck, so I have time between my drive as they hit 3 shots on my way to my drive. I’m usually walking the rough line trying to stay out of the way, but keep moving so I don’t get bored. When I miss, it’s usually not going to be found, so I don’t really bother looking all that much. Drop and go, I like 18 holes to be a 3 hour walk.

We're too good to go looking for golf balls, and you'd never find a ball retriever in my staff bag! 🤑

So if some of you hit say a brand new Pro v,Chrome Soft whatever into a shallow pond,(within range of getting it),
and a buddy in your foursome had a retriever, "you wouldn't ask to borrow it?"
I'm calling BS on anyone that would say NO!

If by myself and going slow, Yes. Typically I use it to help someone I'm playing with. A water ball, to me, is considered donating to the cause.
Depends. I've watched people once they have the retriever out now looking for more than a single-use.
I have a retriever because it is more golf gear to buy. Seldon used, not sure why I have half the crap I do in my bag--makes the pushcart hard to push, but what if I needed it????? Down right dumb now I type this out. Coming out of the bag.
