Just some random thoughts:
We have a couple of par'5 here where you have to lay up short before a water hazard, for the 2nd shot then being to long to go to green. I bet the course designer didn't imagine the big hitters wacking one over the trees on the previous/next fairway taking the water out play and turn the hole into a par4.
I still remember the days when the 13th of Augusta was played as a par 5, until Tiger started to draw one around the corner with his 5 wood. Now every one is playing the hole like that. The skill level of players increased, you can't roll back.
It's not a easy problem to make courses that can accomodate pro's and amateurs of all skill levels alike. And the differences between pro's and amateurs are getting bigger and bigger.
I do like the idea of long roughs, slower fairways,... basicly the course setup at the Ryder Cup in Paris. During the year members and visitors play in better conditions, but for the Ryder they toughened the course. The Americans were lost, European players are more use to that.
