letthebigdogshunt For me, the lack of new and competitive components is the reason for the lack of interest. Back in the early 2000s, you had components that were ahead of the OEM and saw major gains.
It started for me with the KZG PFT300 and an AJTech Shaft, all candy apple red. I pulled it out and the guys I was playing with chuckled, I hit it, sounded like a “garbage can”, more snickering, when we got over the crest of the hill to see our drives, I rolled over the back of the green, they were 50 yards short of the front edge... no more snickering. I was hooked.
Got an Alpha 830 I think, played a scramble with the “big hitter” at the club, out drove him all day vs his Cleveland Launcher. More excitement.
BOM, the Mellow Yellow, Bangster OL, DCT, Fail Safe, couple of the Tourswing heads, the stalwart DB455 still is with me, tried almost all of the SMT line, Ashton X1 and M5 I think it was. Got into LD, built a bunch there, it was FUN. New toy all the time, but then the market shifted and now component costs more than OEM in a lot of cases. I built probably 20 or more different iron sets for myself in that time too, tried all sorts of things, irons are just about fit, not much else IMO.
I don’t have the time to screw with as much now, and irons are a pain in the @$$ because I need HEAVY graphite shafts and x flex, so the cost is high, results don’t justify changing. Drivers with the adjustable hosel make life so much easier, I don’t have to set up the puller, hope not to scorch/ Scratch anything, and then clean out epoxy, set ferrules etc. worst case is a cut and glue for an adapter and I go as far as to spine it for my intended position of use, but that’s it. The adapters are good enough now, it’s made it too easy to want to bother with the old school.
