We changed to the metric system when I was 12 (that's years -- no metric needed), and I still hardly use it. My niece, however, doesn't understand when you say anything in Imperial.
I have to say that the metric system makes a lot of sense when it comes to measurement and, once you get used to it, it is a lot easier to take, add, and/or divide measurements. Everything is base 10, so you never have to deal with fractions (i.e., there's no 3/16ths of inch added to 5/8 of inch, and such).
