Exactly! My driver and single long hybrid cover the distance on most holes to put me in 6h, 8h, or W range. Carrying a 3w, 5w, is of no use and I suck with them anyway. A good strike with my 4h (likely) goes way farther than a topped FW metal (also likely).

IMO it's because of the lower dwindling swing speed for lower lofted frwy's. 20 deg. minimum for a frwy. Minimalist seniors like hybrids as they are shorter playing length easier to make solid impact and almost go as far as a frwy. From experience I see Minimalist's using middle of the bag not often. Mostly a 4i/5i is used for chipping from out under trees. 😊

I still have two full bag sets (Hogans and Cobras). Why I keep them I do not know as I rarely play them. I guess I might take them to a corporate event or a hobnob get together. I really should just go full tilt and be myself and always play the minimalist set. Most folks I do play with are taken back with the minimal concept and some (I think) have even have felt sorry for me like , "poor guy that can't afford a full set". 😁 Some tell me they cannot play minimalism. Maybe they think more clubs are a security blanket. But truly, how many clubs do you really need? I played the same five to seven over and over till I embraced minimalism. I ask you, what is more sophisticated in golf than a hand selected, carefully chosen six club set?
I also have a hickory set I restored and they are going no where except the course couple times a year.

Do the minimal...play position and enjoy.IMHO

I went down from 3 full bags to just the 1 with a couple of spares; 23 clubs to choose from, that's already very minimalist for me, and I'm contemplating now to sell a set of wedges to get it down to 20 clubs. I didn't look at performance when choosing, but kept the clubs I enjoyed most.

In fact in my spares I have a 3 iron that I keep because it's part of a set, but no longer play and there is a set of 4 hybrids I do not play as well but I keep because by the time I need them they will no longer exist. So that makes 15 clubs to choose from : 2 different drivers that find their way in and out my bag depending on the lenght of the course : 1 thriver for precission, 1 regular driver for distance.

As such I play the same clubs (different shafts) as I did 20 years ago, except the driver(s) and a new putter, when the rules obliged me to retire the old trusted bellyputter. When I look at sites like https://takomogolf.com/iron-101t/ I still feel tempted to put them in the cart (old habbits die hard), but why bother if after 20 years I always go back to the same stuff.

Another take on minimalist golf : having just one bag, that is just perfectly enjoyable.

4 clubs. 19* frwy wood off tee and 1st shot in fairways, 34* iron, 55* wedge and putter. 2700 yards. Jones bag, I can play to around 40 on average no need for much more. Get good with the clubs you carry and golf is easy. 😊

We make the game way harder than it really is. All the off line shots, the recovery shots, the poor chips and pitches and poor putting etc drive up the score. If your scratch or a pro carry 14 the rest of us yadda yadda. 😁

scotts33 That is awesome! I was just thinking this morning I could probably go down to four clubs. 4W, 7i, 50* W, & putter. I have played five quite a few times but never tried just four. I think its worth a try. I totally agree with your concept of getting good with the few and KEEP IT IN PLAY. BTW....shot 77 with hickories last week using only 7 clubs including two LG persimmon woods. Sr. tees of course.

Played twice this week. It's come down to close wedge shot for me to score excellent. I am carrying two wedges, Cleveland niblick 42* and 50* Miura W. I think I need to eliminate one from the minimal bag as they play totally different but yet both serve same purpose 100 yds in. Different style swing as the niblick is a glorified chipper. With just six clubs switching wedge swing every other hole just adds more complication to minimal concept. I like the Miura because traditional wedge shape gives me confidence out of fluff or up steep sided greens or over a tree. The niblick incidentally can do almost the same shots (almost) and has a feel of its own. I want to simplify and dedicate to just one in the style of minimalism. Hmmmmmm. Which to keep?

Walterjn I agree. The Miura gap is adjusted 2* upright lie and hits sweet. Less swing thoughts to de-clutter.

Isn't that one of the aspects of a Miura?? A buddy has 2 sets. He just got the 2nd set this year.

Walterjn This is my third Miura club. Have owned two wedges and a 7 iron. I am no expert but I can definitely tell the difference striking them vs. say a Cleveland, Hogan, or other upper end club. I told a friend they don't seem to be just a club....they seem to me to be finely tuned instruments.

Hickorygolf59 The Hiro Honma #4 17 deg. persimmon wood that I have is a keeper! If you can find one reasonable highly recommend it.
