My belief is that all golfers of a certain age grew up playing blades.....that's all there was back in the day! We survived them then, and we COULD survive them now. However, if the technology is available to help us get the most out of our misses, why not take advantage of it?
I still have a set of Hogan Apex blades that I've re-shafted with graphite just for fun.
I take them out once a year, hit 'em OK, but not as well or as far as their comparable
cavity backed modern clubs. Not as forgiving, either.
If I were seriously going to try blades, I would try the Maltby MMB-17 heads on appropriate shafts for me, mainly because I believe there's something to the Maltby Playability Factor, and I think Maltby builds
all of its iron heads with the MPF in mind. I don't think I'd be as consistent with that set as I would be with
my modern cavity backs, but I think I could play within a few shots of my normal game. Just my opinion, and
not something I'm planning to try.....!
