Generally, kids who go off to University or College are 18 years of age and most have not worked long enough to accumulate the 6 figure plus that it costs. My daughter works two jobs in summer and part time while in school. What she makes is her spending money and She also got some athletic and academic scholarship money that paid for books and meals etc.
As parents I believe one of our main responsibilities is to help our children financially if needed and especially early on in their lives. To me that includes paying for University tuition and accommodations. I certainly don't want my kids to have a $100,000 plus dollars in debt that cripples them at a young age after University. I was lucky and received big grant and scholarship dollars so only had $3,000 dept after two University degrees. I did do a coop program which extended the degree over 5.5 years but gained related work experience and made money in those work placements so that helped a lot.
For my kids , It's like them getting an advance on their inheritance, we can't take the money with us when we die, and it gets taxed to shit, so let's spend it purposefully when alive.
I can see that it's a big expense and requires discipline and sacrifice to save for but We did that and saved the money and used a government program that we have up here called a Registered Education Savings Program that started 12 years ago , a tax free investment program , well tax on g4ant and capital gains is
taxed in students name. There is a 20% grant each year on up to $2500 annually per child. This helped us save enough for 3/4 of the costs for both kids.
Not sure why you would say getting a College or University education A waste, it's still the main requirement to getting jobs up here , unless somebody wants to be a labourer or tradesman ( nothing wrong with that, but any job in computers, technology, finance, medicine, teaching, police, etc etc requires a University or College degree.
my daughter wants to be a forensic psychologist for the Police and son a Video game developer, they both must have a University Degree to ever think of working in those fields so are attending a university ( well my son isn't but has been accepted for Computer Science)
almost everybody I know has gone to Univesity or College ( perhaps it's different up here) and done very well in their careers. A couple guys are tradesmen , one guy sells cars ,and make their modest $100k a year which pays the bills and gives them a comfortable life.
one is in real estate and does well and few others lucked out into family businesses but they all still went to school. Lots of jobs to do whatever option one chooses , school or no school.
Also, to add University is so much more than just getting an education and a degree. It's an incredible life experience .
Re the op, it's disgusting what these folks did...hope they spend some time in the azzmount hotel.
