I'd say, it's a little of both. The original vote was over 50% in favor of accepting female membership, but failed the 60% required to pass. Now the second voting overwhelmingly voted to open its membership to women.

Not that this should be a consideration factor whatsoever, because (at least in the western hemisphere!) most of us recognize that women are entitled to the same standards of equality as men. But given the overall state of golf, particularly as it pertains to waning interest....

Is there really a problem here? I'm not sensing that 500 women are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to submit a membership application to Royal Troon. Now I could be wrong, have been before. Maybe I'm seriously understating the popularity of the game for the women in Europe. But I'm just not sensing that this is going to be a huge inconvenience to the male membership there. And if it happens to be a matter of principle, then I'm still not getting it. No, I don't want girls applying for membership in the boy scouts of American, because they have an organization all to themselves. But golf? Seriously?

Economics may also played a major role in the change over decision.

Same as on this side of the pond, many private golf courses are experiencing lost of membership in recent years. They will take anyone whom could afford the initiation fee and the monthly due.

Maybe. I mean - I honestly don't know how deeply the club is intertwined with modern day politics, and how all of that could eventually force their hand to make concessions of that nature, for potential sustainment revenues long term. Maybe there was a closed-door meeting with officials from the R&A and were informed that should they want to maintain a place in the Open Championship rota, they needed make a change to their male-only policy.

Or... maybe the old geezers with all of the old money are becoming fewer and fewer, and the younger influential members who tend to be a little more openminded than their predecessors are trying to soften the elitist nature there just enough to give the appearance that they're embracing typical cultural norms.

But yeah, at the end of the day it probably was a decision made more for financial reasons than anything else.

Of course , unable to host another Open is not just losing the boasting right , the financial impact is huge.

R & A was pushing through the change faster than time would take naturally. Accepting the female membership is Inevitable from the over 50% approval vote the last time. Changes are faster nowadays, instead of patience, people want it and want it now.

Unisex public "toilet" is very common overseas.
I was not used to seeing a female coming out while I was going in.

I guess, there wouldn't be any issue if everyone pay attention to good hygiene practice. My wife would definitely think otherwise. We might revert back to the squatting style for better Hygiene in the public bathrooms.
