johnnydoom I’m trying my best to give sound arguments as to why I think the current NCAA system is good, and apparently football fans agree. The only argument I get from you is that everyone else is doing it a different way, and some strange argument that sports is only sports as defined by you.

professor I can understand how he doesn’t realize that there are 411 division II and III teams to go and watch which have the “meaningful” playoff systems he so craves - to accept the numbers. I can also understand why he might not realize that that NFL, a for profit business, would gladly expand to provide the competition so desperately desired by a public so let down by the college bowl system if the numbers showed a good profit.

In reality, I do actually understand his emotional desire for a larger playoff that offers the opportunities for access and visibility to teams on the edge. I just think it’s fine to have one system that offers something different, and to point out that ticket sales speak to the appeal of that difference. Far from being disappointed that the system is not perfect (whatever that is), more fans find this system attractive even though “everyone else” doesn’t do it that way.

Toulon This is the GREATEST thing to happen for college football in a long time. More and more top players are foregoing their opportunity to play in a meaningless exhibition game. Ultimately, this could lead to complete disinterest and collapsing of the ridiculous bowl system that is anti-sports and pro-corporate America.

So, let's do some debunking on Mr. Toulon's post and his opinion. I wonder how many players constitutes "more and more top players are foregoing their opportunity" to represent their school in a bowl game they earned to opportunity in which to play.

For example, in today's Fiesta Bowl a junior running back for Kentucky (a school rarely landing a New Year's Day bowl invitation) - this Benny Snell Jr. set the Kentucky rushing record as he led his team to victory. Kentucky finishes the season with 10 wins - rarely done. And, it appears that Mr. Snell will be on his way to being drafted by an NFL team.
This is so "anit-sports"! LOL

The trend is more and more. Nothing debunked because Benny Snell played in the meaningless bowl game. The guy you should've cited is Josh Allen. That guy might be a Top 3 pick. He plays for Kentucky and tore up the game from what I read on Twitter. I wouldn't know because I won't watch corporate exhibition games.

Didn't want to start a Benny Snell 40 thread so I dredged this up.

I just watched Benny Snell run his 40. He clocked a 4.70. That's not even good for an EDGE player.

That time may put him out of the draft completely. Maybe, a late 7th rounder.

He does get one more run, but unlikely he's too much faster. If slower, he's out of the draft and will be signing with a team after the draft is over.

Corey Clement is his closest comp only going back to 2017. Clement ran 4.68 and went undrafted.

EDIT: Snell ran a 4.67 on his 2nd attempt. Late Day 3 guy.

2nd EDIT: Walter Football predicted he'd run 4.68 and would be picked in Rounds 2-3. Hmmm. We'll see.

I get how this year's semifinals appear to validate the four-team playoff format, but it's wrong to assume that's how it will play out every year. In 2015, Ohio State as the 4-seed upset 1-seeded Alabama. Furthermore, they came very close to not being selected to the playoff, which would have left out a team that proved it could win it all. That's a scenario that absolutely needs to be avoided.

I think an 8 team playoff is the sweet spot. Argument over who deserves #8 vs. #9 would continue just as #4 vs. #5 now, but it would be much less critical. The odds of a #9 team being capable of making noise in the playoffs are much more slim than #5. Even a 6 team playoff would be a better option than 4.

A 16-team playoff is too much. It would hurt the regular season too much. Marquee games between top teams would lose luster. Also, it would make it more likely that injuries would be a bigger factor in determining the champion.

Haha. Thanks. I also agree with keeping the bowls. I don't care if they are exhibition games and if more players will decide to forgo playing in them because of their potential pro careers. Games like LSU vs UCF are interesting, even if they aren't a playoff game. I can choose not to watch the third-place MAC team versus the fourth-place Sunbelt team.

MidwayJ I have come.to agree with this. I used to rail against them, but in reality it was always about the lack of.playoff to determine a champion. The bowls will and should always have a place at the end of the year. Who woulda thunk Texas would take out Georgia! And as lame as Wisconsin's year was, it was fun to watch them lay an azz whooping on Miami! Wouldn't ever want to lose thator these games, like the UCF/LSU.

I sure didn't. I said somewhere earlier in the thread that I thought Georgia was clearly the 3rd, and possibly the 2nd best team😊 even while arguing that they still didn't deserve to be in a playoff due to the two loses. Didn't think there was any way Texas could get that win.

Sorry, in my book, if a guy's more than likely a pick in the first few rounds of the draft, he's an elite talent.
