I'm so sorry you had to watch your father suffer and go through this yourself.
I've avoided commenting on this thread until now. I hate shaving. Razors have always torn up my sensitive skin so I've used an electric for the past 30 years. I look mean with a shadow...I guess some would say cool or grungy but I hate shaving so much I just decide to look vagrant most of the time. I don't grow it out much. I actually shave with a hair clipper now. If it gets a little too long I just buzz over it real quick and I'm done.
Now, to the reason I've avoided this subject. As a prostate cancer survivor, I don't really care much for these kinds of shows of awareness. I would tell EVERY SINGLE MAN to DO HIS OWN RESEARCH. There is a lot of information out there. I once was a proponent of having everyone tested after I was told I had two years left if I failed to act. Now, I feel differently. There is nothing more over-diagnosed than prostate cancer. Many men live with absolutely brutal complications the rest of their days because of the procedures they have performed many of which are completely unnecessary.
Again, look into what goes on in the diagnosing of the disease and really know your stuff before you ever have to cross that bridge because when it's your time it'll be much harder to be rational and have a plan. I rushed into my decision like a student cramming for a final exam. I still wonder if I made the right decision all the time. I was a borderline case where I was labeled with an "aggressive" form. Gleason 7 trending up. Do your due diligence and make sure you understand all of your options. My fear is way too many men react out of fear rather than understanding. I don't know which group I fall more into but I do have some regrets.
