I posted something about this a week or two ago (see "My Hybrid Experiment"). I think if "hybrids are dead" on the PGA tour, it's because those guys don't need them. With their high swing speeds, they can hit and elevate 3 irons, etc. without any difficulty, so why bother with a hybrid? For amateurs like us (esp. seniors!), we need all the help we can get. My "experiment" taught me to look carefully at the specs of the hybrid vs. the fairway wood, then proceed intelligently from there. From now on, I'll choose a club based on what distance AND trajectory I can hit it, and where does that fit into my "set of clubs"....... As I grow older (just turned 73), I'm sure I'll do more experimenting with fairway clubs (either woods or hybrids) in the 24, 28 and even higher range of lofts to replace iron lofts that I can no longer hit consistently and fill distance gaps between fairway woods and the irons.
