Every 4th of July, our club has traditionally hosted a 1-man scramble tournament. It's the only scramble tournament that I look forward to each season. And it is as-described.... it's an individual tournament, each player gets two shots to choose from on every swing or stroke, a scramble format.
I shot 63 and won it back in 2014. Then I shot 61 the following year and lost by one stroke. lol
That year I won, I had at least 3 putts from inside 6 feet for birdie that I couldn't convert. It could've been even better. But then I rolled in some putts from 20-30 feet and it all averaged out, I guess. But it's a super fun tournament and they break out the BBQ grill and have grilled hotdogs and hamburgers for everybody making the turn. They also have several beer keg stations on the course. It's just a good time.
Years ago when I would go out by myself and playing a solo practice round, I'd play "worst ball." Scramble format, hit two shots on every swing or stroke. Except I had to play (what I felt) was the worst shot of the two. Sometimes the resulting score for a hole wouldn't change much, if any. But there were a lot of times when I'd hole a 6-7-footer to save par on my first putting attempt, which naturally put a lot of pressure to hole the second putt, because you had to play the worst result.
My best worst-ball score is 79. And I felt like I'd played well enough with my best ball that day to shoot in the 60's.
Worst-ball format reinforces the precept that we can only be as good as our worst shots allow us to be, and forces us to execute good shots under some means of pressure. It's a great practice round format on those days when you're struggling with managing your game. It also teaches us the value of patience.
