I have used SkyDroid and VPar (recommended by somebody on Party of Fore). Both are solid and offer satellite views of the holes but VPar has a nicer user interface for the GPS. But VPar also wants to keep track of your rounds and such, which I don't want in a GPS. Give me the yardage and leave me alone!
I tried a few others but for the full version (more detailed GPS info), they wanted you to pay for it (I think that was 18 Birdies and Golf Logix).
Personally, I prefer to leave my phone in the golf bag and have a dedicated GPS where the screen is always on as you grab it and look at it without having to fuss with anything. You do that with your phone (leave the screen on for 4-5 hours straight) and it will suck the battery dry.
I will keep both SkyDroid and VPar on my phone for when I play a course I am unfamiliar with, so I can see the satellite images and get that additional point of view to help me, but other than that, my little GPS is all I need.
