I saw somewhere on a TV thing that they try to get player's with "football IQ" as well as smarter guys in general.
I also think all the parts are "engineered" to work together.

That doofus Talib was quoted as saying that you spend one year in NE and you learn what "professional" means.
That might be the smartest thing he has said recently.

What New England does best with their players is to put them in a position where they can succeed by not asking them to do something they can't do well. Heath Evans said it best when he went to New England and Belichick used him for what he did best. Evans told Belichick that he couldn't do certain things etc. and Belichick said we're not going to ask you to do those things.

Basically they utilize their personnel as good or better than anyone in the league by utilizing the player's strengths.

PA-PLAYA i read somewhere where Brady has an offseaSon camp with select receivers on the team. He spends the entire offseason with them honing their timing and staying in shape. They aren't doing this is "Patriots" so it doesn't exist in New England. I heard that when Edelman arrived in New England and was barely making the roster that he actually tried to figure out how to get Brady to invite him out to LA in the offseason to train with him. Evidently this little offseason "camp" has worked to enhance not only Brady's career, but also a few of New England's receivers that wouldn't even make a roster somewhere else.

Beyond that I'd really like to know how every other team ahead of the Patriots in the draft failed to take Gronkowski? What was his deal out of college, because as it looks right now, he should have been the #1 overall pick when drafted. I mean, can anyone cover him? He's just a man among boys and virtually unstoppable. But New England shouldn't have been able to draft him if he was that good in college.

Brady has already started the clock for training for the upcoming season. Few players train like Brady including nutrition. Brady was very good in college as well, but did not impress at the NFL combine.

Gronk had a back injury lifting weights and after successful surgery decided to forego his $4 million insurance policy and enter the draft after his junior year. The Patriots took him in the second round (42nd pick). I'm sure the back injury was an issue with some of the teams.

There are guys who know the game, and then there are guys who just never stop being a student. Such is Brady, always preparing, always ready. In that final game against Denver, not once did it look like NE was going to win, yet Brady single handedly almost got his team into the SB. Like Jordan, Lebron, Tiger - once in a lifetime player.

Tom Brady is in a class all to himself. I don't care for the team he plays for, but you can't not respect the impact he's had in the NFL throughout his career.

Granted - Phillips inherited a great situation back in January of 2015... but it was more than just good chemistry and athleticism. One of the more memorable defenses, maybe even better than Baltimore or Seattle, although that could be argued either way.

Wade Phillips has effectively debunked this notion that a team can't win the SB without a great quarterback, and to be honest - there are a lot of teams (my Eagles included!) who would love to take a page out of that very playbook.

Newton couldn't carry the Panthers no more than Manning carried the Broncos. The Denver defense was good, but nowhere near an all-time great defense. Hell, my Bears only lost to them by 2.

Brsmith, just finished watching ESPN's 30 for 30 85 Bears. More than one player made the point that the Bears played under a different set of rules that allowed targeting QB's and receivers, spearing offensive players that were on the ground and holding at the line of scrimmage. They admitted that under todays rules they would be paying fines nearly every play.
The point is that comparing different era's for defenses is more involved than looking at just stats. I would place the Denver defense in the top 3 all time.

The Panthers were very predictable. They carried on with a business-as-usual approach to their offense, and the Bronco's were simply ready for it. Had the offense been a bit more creative, the result probably isn't the same. So you have to credit Denver for adjusting their defense, and then discredit Carolina for not adjusting theirs.

I was very surprised that the play-action wasn't utilized more.

i live in sf.. about 3 blks from ground zero 'superbowl city' that you saw front and center from espin's coverage...

we were abroad and returned last friday..... amazing the leverage the nfl has. basically shut down major corridors and public transportation for 3 weeks. venues all over the city - music, fan events, most restaurants reserved for corporate events. hard to believe a 70k stadium could have this impact on a city 35mi away from the game....

venues included favorite sons metallica, chris issac, alicia keys, various rappers, protesters (blacklivesmatter, homeless, righttolife, righttochose,.....). from our standpoint we got a coupla evening of great fireworks, so all good

regardless, seems like most of the tourists (my unofficial count had bronco gear outnumbering panther's stuff 5:1) had a good time and the city mopped up in extra revenue....

still deconstructing this week and things should get back to normal

nfl is the boss apparently....

fyi... 9r's used to own this city, now a distant 3rd behind the warriors and giants (you're 2016 world series champions imho)
