As reported yesterday, the only tickets available to attend this event live and in-person are reserved for VIP's and sponsors. The general public isn't invited to attend.

Anyone recall those prime time matches a bunch of years ago? I think the might have been on prime time network TV. The only thing I really remember were that the final few holes were played "under the lights".

You might be referring to the 2001 Battle of Bighorn series, with a mixed couples format. Woods was paired with Annika, and Duval was paired with Karrie Webb. I think it was a course out on the west coast... quick search suggests it was Sherwood Country Club out in LA.

They're excluding the public in hope of driving up the PPV sales, I guess. It may have the opposite effect.

I don't think it'll matter either way. Nobody that I know who is a golf fan is remotely interested in watching it. Not even if it was free on cable tv.

I guess we'll see next month, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the promoters open the ticket sales to the public to attend the event in-person at the last minute. Given the timing especially, I just don't think this was well thought-out. It might end up that they would've made more money offering the coverage to Golf Channel via cable tv, given the advertising potential. But even that scenario is 50/50.

Who cares??? What non-compelling TV this will turn out to be. PPV - what a joke...crap like this is what has turned me into an old curmudgeon. Being done for the money and that is it.

I'm just guessing, but I figure that the sponsors are the ones who take the fall for this. You can bet that both Phil and Tiger are gonna be there, rain or shine.

Of course, there's the nitty-gritty regarding the contractual agreements. Perhaps the sponsors are requiring a minimal amount of PPV revenue to help sustain their investments. That's not been made public, as far as I know.

Like I said earlier - Golf Channel could air this live and even then, still, I don't think it would garner television ratings on cable tv.

College football and the NFL will trump those ratings, even if it was aired live and free on cable tv programming.

Golf is pretty much dead viewing from October until the Florida Swing in March, re: tv ratings.
