Went to a local AAA minor league baseball game last night. It was a lot of fun.... but one of the things I noticed was a 20-second pitch timer. It speeded up the game quite noticeably. A lot of the baseball analysts think that grooming the minor league players to play at a quicker pace will eventually lead to a quicker game at the next level that doesn't take 4+ hours to play out.
So my obvious question to Jay Monahan is why not introduce this same concept on the PGA Tour? I tried to watch the last two hours of the Quicken Loans tournament Sunday (I didn't DVR it because it wasn't high on my list of DVR recording priorities). So many freaking commercials... players fiddle-farting around and spending entirely too much time figuring out where the moon's gravitational pull was coming from. A week before - Bryson was using a compass to figure out where the pins were located specifically on the greens.
All these other sports are doing everything they can to speed up the game. You have a shot clock in the NFL when on offense. Minor league baseball has introduced a shot clock in an effort to speed up the game with up-n-coming future players. Even in tennis - they monitor pace of play. The NBA and the NCAA have shot clocks.
Why does the US PGA Tour continue to ignore this? There's no reason for a 3-group backup on Sunday (or any day) for a group having to wait on the next tee on the PGA Tour.
Implement the shot clock. Hold guys like J.B Holmes accountable for their slow pace.
