Great article Scott. Not surprised. I knew I could assume that the specs of my clubs were only accurate on the machine and method used on the day they were used by the person who did it. After that..................

Question - "What loft is your driver?"
Answer - "It depends....."

I want my inconsistency to be all my own - not my club's. I would go crazy trying to decide who to blame! (Its Baaab, I usually blame Baaab).

I could FN care for the driver and putter, but I want consistency throughout the irons. Consistent flex, distance gaps, etc. I'm a nerd at my core, so all of this measurement stuff fits. My neufinder is my friend, as is a loft/lie machine. And then I forget all of it when I hit the course... along with how to play.

I never said I worried about the specs affecting my game. I don't think about how clubs are made when I'm playing the game, I just hit the damn ball, go find it and hit it again. I am, however still interested in how stuff is built, how quality is controlled, and the engineering behind it all.

RobertThomas agree with most what you say, but it also blows when you have clubs way off spec and wander why the 6 and 7i or 7 and 8i, etc., go the same distance. It happens plenty and there is only so much an informed golfer, hobbyist, etc. Can do....we are at the mercy of the builder/fitter.....not to dissimilar to relying on a mechanic, an electrician, plumber, etc. Ever felt like someone in the service industry was bleeping you over?

I get this, if your 6 and 7 are going the same distance, then something is wrong, go to fitter and I would think he/she could tell you why. I have never had this problem and have owned many sets of irons, mostly major manufacturers. I just think most golfers think too much and stopping this would improve a lot of games.

OEM have always made drivers higher lofted than the number on the sole. It’s an effort to play to the golfers ego while giving them something they can actually hit. Noble effort but not really what you would call truth in advertising. Imagine what would happen if a food company put out a banana cream pie and printed zero calories on the box.

Tim Hewitt's shaft profile spreadsheet was ahead of it's time, but the industry wants to keep things Top Secret, unfortunately. It's how they get away with their BS.
