A snapping turtle will bite a chuck of flesh off like a small alligator with more biting force .

Old folklore said the snapping dragon will only release the bite when thunder hits close by.

I would just pull out the neck ( with it still gripping the target ) and cut the head off.
A very primitive creature.

Some said it's egg and flesh are tasty. Never had it and don't want to try the flesh of a creature lived in swamp.

I don't mess with them, but I have seen them cleaned and have eaten the meat. It's very good if prepared by someone who knows what they're doing. FYI - your described method of how to handle them is what I've seen done... they continue to stay clamped down after this.

Dude nearly lost his nose being stupid. Snapping turtles are nothing to mess with. We see dogs down here learn the hard way all the time.

Alligator snapper, big one at the Tulsa Aquarium is 122 lbs. He could easily take a hand off.

We have Snapping Turtles at our course also. As a kid, I was the greens keeper there and often had to catch and move them off of the course. They would move from a lagoon area (back and forth) to a creek that traveled through the course. I can remember one time where I was having trouble getting into position the grab a turtle and decided to just put a stick near it's mouth to see if it would grab it and hold on so I could drag it to where it wouldn't be in the way. It snapped a couple of sticks that had fallen from nearby trees that were 1" in diameter and I then tried a bigger one that was a good 1.5" diameter. That one was also snapped in two but the turtle was now where I could get behind it, so I was able to grab it and put it into Cushman Carry-all to remove it and move it to the creek a little ways from the course. Their jaws are very strong. As for eating the meat, A local cop loved it and said the turtles have several types of meat which vary in taste and texture, depending on which part of the turtle it comes from. I tried it and personally didn't care for it.

My favorite Golf Course Owner, unfortunately who Died in the 2000's , revered these Creatures.

There were two Ponds on the Front side and also a Major river. On the Back side, there were an additional two Ponds and a Creek feeding into aforementioned river.

IF You Were a Member of the course ... You Knew that The Snappers were Precious.

Take a Snapper ... Never a Member again ... Have a guest of a Member take a Snapper ... Same Thing.

Other words ... Leave them alone ...
