For my whole life, I have not been able to trust a 5 iron. Nor a 4 iron. 3 iron, 2 iron, don't make me laugh!
But 5 irons, come on, those should be dependable. I'm not talking about modern 18 degree 5 irons either. I'm talking old school 26-27-28 (even 30?) degree 5 irons.
I have tried self-fitting so many different 5 irons, it's not funny. Every weight and flex of steel, swingweights, graphite, longer, shorter, hot face, single length.... Believe or not, I don't dread hitting one. At least I don't think I do. Maybe I am so clueless that I don't even know I'm dreading it.
And 5 hybrids are just as bad. No, worse! Again, short ones, long ones, ones that look like irons, ones that look like fairway woods, same shaft as my irons, .335 shafts, .370 shafts....
Every golfer has a curse. This is mine.
Today I dragged out the 31 degree Quick Strike II hybrid, which is really a utility wood. Don't try to tell me it's a 5 hybrid. 🙂
