I had an epiphany recently. I started playing my son's clubs that I built for him several years ago. They are a Cally X-20 clone, the Tour Series TS2300. With Dynalite R shafts. I hit these great. Normally I play a basic GI CB such as Wishon 752 or similar. These are different from what I normally play in several ways.
-Low COG.
-Wider soles.
-Heavier shaft.
-Stiffer butt CPM.
-Soft tip
I think the shaft has a lot to do with my success. It seems the weight works for me, and the soft tip does too. (It will be very interesting to see how consistent I am with my 60 gram Launcher HB demo set mentioned in another thread.)
But the clubhead works too. Shots feel more solid. I'm a sweeper and tend to hit a groove lower than what's ideal. I probably should have been using something like this all along. I've been looking at the MPF ratings of other heads and especially the VCOG number, trying to come up with something to buy/build. Looking for low VCOG. I'm up for suggestions. (Pings are generally high VCOG.)
The KE4-S is probably a good one. I think they cost too much and the cost of extra screws just pisses me off. But if they are the right heads, I'll do it.
The Acer XV, either HL or regular, is probably a good choice. The HL's are almost identical in shape and sole to the heads in my son's set. I know earlier I said I want thinner soles, but I'm reconsidering. I like some offset, but the XV have a LOT of it.
I could buy an overpriced set of new Infiniti KO heads. They look similar to Callys.
I'm on the lookout for the Cally Razr X irons. They have good numbers.
What else? What I am forgetting?
