About 10 years ago a buddy and myself were playing an afternoon round at the club, just the two of us. As we made the turn I was +3 and he was +7. We quickly ran inside to use the bathroom, as the 10th tee is only 100 yards away from the clubhouse. As we were leaving, the guy in the pro shop said to us, "You guy's had best hurry, we've got some severe thunderstorms coming this way in about 90 minutes!"
I could see the dark clouds looming closer and closer as we teed off on the 10th hole. The wind started picking up and the temps dropped a good 7-8 ยบ. I said to him, "If we're gonna do this - we gotta hurry." He nodded in agreement. We decided to try to get it in.
It took us an hour to play the back-nine. One practice swing, hit the ball. One practice putting stroke, putt the ball. No gimmees, straight up per the rules. We were simply trying to get the round completed before the severe weather hit. No time to think, just enough time to react.
I ended up shooting 34 on the back, 73 on the day. He ended up shooting +2 on the back, +9 on the day.
More time spent surveying and second-guessing doesn't help us very much. That's what I learned that day.
PS - ended up getting the brunt of the storm within 10 minutes of the drive home. It was coming down so hard that we both had to pull over to the side of a 2-lane road and we put our 4-way blinkers on. The windshield wipers couldn't clear the windshield fast enough to see, it was coming down that hard.
Interesting day.
