Such a great, great interview.
Hogan gave Henry Picard his due credit for mentoring him, teaching him and helping him battle through his struggles early on in his career. Most people have no idea who Picard is. But those who have read of Hogan's history know that he played an enormous role in Ben finally breaking through and eventually becoming one of the all-time greats.
Ben was on the verge of calling it quits back in 1937. Although Ben's bank account was nearly depleted, newly married, and pinching pennies and struggling to make it - Picard knew of Hogan's work ethic. He also knew Ben had a great golf game. He took Hogan under his wing, telling him, "Go play. Whatever happens - I'll take care of you."
That's all Hogan really needed... someone who believed in him besides his wife, a contemporary at that, and offered him a financial safety net when he was nearly bankrupt.
It's a phenomenal story of perseverance. Hogan was, by all means, an overachiever. And the reason he was so successful is because he spent hour upon hour working on his game.
This same kid, some 10 years earlier, witnessed his father blowing his brains out in the family living room.
Hogan was much more than a legend in golf. He was a survivor who overcame every odd thrown against him. With, of course, a little help from guys like Byron Nelson and Henry Picard.
