My favorite used to be the tour velvets. Just a simple rubberized grip. I sweat a lot so I go through a lot of golf gloves in the summer months, and that sweat eventually permeates the grips. Then over the past few years I decided to use the GP New Decade Multi Compound grip a try, half-cord. I really have come to like them.
There are a lot of variables for different grips for different players. I do like the half-cord multi compound grip in my irons, but some prefer the softer, more cushiony feel. Those cushiony grips feel great, for sure, but if you sweat a lot in the summer - they're not good (for me) as I find myself gripping the club too tightly - like you said.
