Broken nose....age 14, Babe Ruth game, playing 3rd base, fielded a ground ball off my nose, bad hop, direct hit, concussion, compound fracture. They did what they could with it and sewed me back up. Unbeknownst to everyone, an artery got busted up too and I continued to bleed, but not visible to anyone. I swallowed so much blood that I threw it all back up. It was so dark, almost black, after sitting in my belly for days....at.the time I figured I was going to die....my dad took me to the hospital and I passed out in the truck on the way from losing so much blood. They figured out the problem and took me to surgery. They had to put padding up my nose and also through my mouth and up my throat, it was all linked together. Spent a week in the hospital, went from about 160 to 140 lbs. Couldn't eat, couldn't talk, and had problems sleeping. In the hospital with people doting over me which was almost worse then all the physical pain. Including my neighbor (in the next hospital bed) and his entire family, he had his appendix removed. Everyone had that "oh my god" look on their face. And the worst, absolute worst pain of all of it was when they took the padding out of my nose at the end if my stay. It was a seemingly never ending amount of gauze padding being fished out by the doctor a 1/2 inch at a time. Every time the doc pulled on that gauze it was excruciating pain. Hard to describe the feeling, but like the doc was pulling through a splintered piece of wood through my nose or shards of glass. Got through that and he yanks on the string attached to the padding through my mouth/throat and it all came out at once.
