I think it goes back to effortless power vs powerless effort. Guys who have reasonably good technique, decent flexibility, and a smooth transition seem to not struggle too much with moderate shaft variances. Sometimes it might mean a higher trajectory/spin rate based on tip stiffness, but I think the key is that the better player's transition from the top is smooth, and they're accelerating the club head through the ball. And, also, maintaining a fairly consistent angle of attack into the ball.
Most of us are actually losing acceleration prior to impacting the ball, and our angles of attack are much more varied. In other words - they're finding the sweet spot a lot more often than we are.
There is a lesson there to be learned, for sure.
