I think that on some level, some of it based on some of the books I've read over the years, Player carried a huge chip on his shoulder because of all the attention Nicklaus and Palmer were getting with their "Big Three" competitions. It was almost as though he was the stepchild of the group.
But he never let that bother him, at least not outwardly. Maybe he harbored some resentment deep down because of all that, but he never let on that it did publicly. In fact - I think that motivated him to excel and helped in becoming the legend he is.
9-time major winner, one of only 5 players to have achieved the career grand slam. Tied with Hogan with 9 majors, only three players have won more.
Although he still seems very competitive at the ripe old age of 82, I think the chip was removed a long time ago.
