Yeah, that's a huge advantage. I have a new AppleTV 4K console for the widescreen in my living room, and the YouTube TV app either came automatically downloaded or perhaps I downloaded it from the AppleTV app (can't remember). It's not a smart tv, as it's several years old, but still excellent quality as far as HD reception.
If I do go with YouTube TV once my deal ends with Directv, my television in my bedroom upstairs is a smart tv with internet capability, so either way I shouldn't have any issues.
This BS about not having CBS with Directv, with football season quickly approaching, is trying my patience. I missed the final round showdown between Brooks and Rory today at the WGC event, would've watched some of it at least if I had the capability.
Sadly I think this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I can easily see the day coming soon when these cable/digital/internet companies gouge the hell out of consumers in a looming free-for-all, the same way the pharmaceutical industry has been allowed to do.
