ZWExton I find that if I'm reading subtitles I am not paying much attention, visually, to what's on screen. Not worth it to me. Exception: The Raid, The Raid 2. Probably because there's not much dialogue, and the martial arts is so intense and insane that I'd just as well watch on mute and be in awe.
Toulon Natpharm I LOVE having subtitles for American/English movies or TV series. I'm always disappointed if they aren't available on whatever I'm watching. I'm not sure why it is I HATE subtitles when there's no accompanying English language? Also, funny you use them on British (I'm assuming that's what you meant?) tv series. I like a lot of those types of shows and my wife can't follow the accents very well. DARK, on Netflix, was one of the best series I've seen, but I would've never watched had they not had an English dub version.
Natpharm Toulon DARK, on Netflix, was one of the best series I've seen, but I would've never watched had they not had an English dub version. And the main reason I quit on DARK was because the dub was driving me crazy. To each their own.
ZWExton Toulon I like a lot of those types of shows and my wife can't follow the accents very well. This reminded me... I watched THE REVENANT, which was fine, but then watched it again with Closed Captioning to figure out what the hell Tom Hardy's character was saying throughout the movie. I knew it was about pelts. Very little else made it through with out the subtitles.
kelco9 I have. My wife and I watched a Spanish series that was really bad but we couldn't stop watching it. We also watch quite a few Indian movies, which have subtitles. I'd prefer to avoid them if possible, though.
Rickochet I watched "Das Boot" in German with English sub titles. No problem. Normally I would only want subtitles if it was in a foreign language or if the sound quality was questionable. My hearing is iffy and I had a lot of issues understanding speach on a lot of shows and movies. I bought a Zvox sound system that allows you to adjust all of the sound channels and I tweaked the mid channels where the voices usually are. The Zvox also keeps the sound at a constant level and doesn't blast you out during action scenes.
johnnydoom I watch a lot of foreign language movies with subtitles - so subtitles don't bother me. However, I haven't watched a series of any sort in quite some time, and would be less inclined to do so with subtitles. I generally only use the tv for sports and news these days and less of each of those as the years go by.
Weirfan Subtitles dont bother me. One of the best series i have ever watched was a Norweigian show with subtitles called Broen ( The Bridge). Highly recommended if yoh havent watched. Dark is dubbed with a few subtitles transalting text, again zero issues.
LBlack14 Par4QC Absolutely! I watch TV with no sound, captions only. Always have. I was wondering when you'd be along. 🙂
ode Sure....got to be in the right frame of mind to pay attention, but there is so much good stuff out there, Dark, amores perros, city of god, etc. You can't text and surf the net, play your Android games.and watch foreign movies, it doesn't work😉
Toulon ode Boy, how times have changed. I wonder how much time in a 100 minute movie I'm actually looking at the screen? My wife has to be about 10-15 minutes unless she's gripped from the get go. I probably prefer dubs to subs because I can still look away. 🙂 I'm glad DARK was a dub or I'd have never made it. Maybe, I'll try getting through a subbed TV series. I'm running out of things to watch.
mikeintopeka I used to but I think I burned myself out watching Japanese Godzilla movies with closed captioning.
LBlack14 I can't watch a movie and read subtitles. I have a hard enough time getting through the sports page on the can.
JeffTilley I’ve been watching season one of The Sopranos on dvd. It’s in English with English subtitles. Weird, huh? It was kinda aggravating at first, but the show is very interesting and I’ve learned to overlook it.
