Two weeks ago my initial round with these irons did not go well, but I felt it was difficult to judge them since I have been basically playing like crap. So, since I was playing two days in a row this week I decided it would be a good time for head to head comparison. I played the Snake Eyes 685OS yesterday and the Pings today.
And the verdict is I can suck with both. ☺ Shot patterns were earily similar. With both irons I can hit a draw that that gets grabbed by a right to left wind and goes WAY left. With both irons I can blade a 9-iron through the green. (Today I also showed how to do that with my Maltby 52 degree wedge.) My score was nearly the same each day, escalated further by chipping and putting that was as bad or worse than iron play.
One difference that hurt me today is I couldn't hit the Ping 5-iron low enough when punching out through the trees. It probably has a little more loft than the Snake Eyes 5-iron. I will probably put the 4-iron in the bag and take out the 60 degree wedge I'm hardly using, anyway. The good news is there definitely isn't anything inherently worse about this set than what I was using. The best shot of the day was a solid 6-iron on a par 3 that ended up 30 feet past the pin. The hole is all carry over water and I was between clubs, so I took the stronger club and of course that's when you flush it. Felt great, though!
