Down here in Florida to escape the winter temps in Ohio. I have played three rounds now, and for the first 2 1/2 of them I have chipped MISERABLY! This @#$%&*%$ Bermuda turf grass is really difficult for some of us yankees to play our normal chip and wedge shot. On the front nine today I gave in and tried the method I've seen lots of guys using down here..... chipping with a straight faced club (5 iron) and running it up, British style. That gets the ball on the green all right, and at least I wasn't wasting two chips per green, but it's still difficult to get the ball close that way. I even putted a couple with a hybrid club.
So, on the back nine, I borrowed my wife's Maltby Sand Slider I made her several years ago. The sole of this thing is at least 2 inches wide with not much bounce, but it seems to eliminate the "chili-dip" that I've been getting down here. Long story short, I could use my usual "Northern" method, but the club glided through the turf and I hit several good chips with it over the last nine holes! My wife may never see this club again until we get back to Ohio. Once we get home, I'll probably switch back to my vokeys rather than listen to the scoffing my golfing
buddies are sure to give me if they see me pull this ugly duckling out of my bag! But I'm not too proud to use
it down here b/c it WORKS!!!
Anyone here still use a Sand Slider???
