Usage of HITTING a hole in one.

On another site a user posts a video of a 103 year old "hitting" a hole in one. This usage of hitting really bothers me. You don't hit a hole in one, you don't shoot a hole in one,you MAKE a hole in one. Am I being anal about this or does it bother others here?

It doesn't bother me but you do have (or make?) a point. After all, you make birdies and pars, you don't hit them. You can "shoot" par for the round. 😜

I agree with your post, but I hate it when someone states someone shot a hole in one, or hit a hole in one. I have made three in my life and not one was shot or hit in the hole.

Anal, here, also. He "made" a hole-in-one. He "aced" a hole. He carded a one on a Par 3. He did not "shoot" a hole-in-one. He did not "hit" a hole in one.

I'm just as bad about the use of "golf" and "golfing". Golf is a noun... NOT a verb. Likewise, golfing is a verb and not a noun.

I'm going to go golf. NO!!!! You are going to play golf!
I'm going to hunt. I'm going to fish. I'm NOT going to golf!!! I'm going golfing. I'm going to play golf.

OTOH, if we can get more people to hit a hole-in-one or to go golf or to shoot par... how did it taste after you shot and cooked it... the more interest we can stimulate in this Great Game the better for us all regardless of what we view proper use of English.

You and my English teacher agree. I still try not to do that, but occasionally I just have bad sentence structure and am too lazy to correct it.

letthebigdogshunt Both of our daughters are in their 40's. They still say, "Where are you at?" Grates like fingernails on a chalkboard!!! It's "Where are you?" Adding the 'at' is not permissible. Any more, I think they do it just to hear me whine!!

limpalong I'm typically a grammar nerd as well, honestly. I feel in this case like "shooting" a hole-in-one would be like someone telling me, "I beated cancer!" I'd say, "THAT IS GREAT!" and let the improper use of language slide.

I've said, "golf is not a verb" dozens of times in my life. I ask my buddy frequently, "do you say that you're basketballing?" But I also don't think there's a universal law to follow about it - bowl/bowling, but not golf/golfing? WHY isn't golf a verb, y'know?

I'm usually just excited that someone wants to (play) golf in general. I punish them on the course. No gimmes for the dunce!

Steve you are right to a point, but the older I get the more the English language bastardized or misused it seems to bother me more. I think some of it comes from having spell check or not learning the proper usage of the language as sternly as we were taught back in grade school and then high school. I try not to be an ass about it, yet at times, there are things that just strike me right between the eyes and make me anal about it.

I'm LMAO because I am the WORSE grammar nerd ever! I constantly correct my wife. I hate what people do to the language - thing is, I can't fix stupid, so I let it go. 😉

Since retirement, I have been substitute teaching. The school is a vocational school for the disadvantaged. At any time, we will have just over 200 students on campus completing their high school and/or learning a trade. The ages are from 17 to 22. The students are very ethnically diverse and have come from some pretty rough environments. Trying to prepare these youth for job interviews and being able to perform in a professional manner when they do become employed has certainly questioned my "grammar policing". First and foremost, grammar wise, is to get them able to hold an intelligent conversation that does not include 4-letter words... and lots of those words. I hear more "FY's" and "MF's" and similar phrases more in one day than I would hear in a week on a construction project while working. Seems the day is spent "Clean up the language! One more of those and you are out of here and on your way to the counseling office!" "Pull up those pants!! No one is going to give you a job looking like a slob!"

Some construction workers are digging a ditch next to a day care right next to the play ground. Guys are shoveling for hours and kids out playing The kids take a lunch break and go inside. The owner of day care goes over and knocks on the construction trailer and asks to speak to the foreman. She complains about the extremely vulgar language the workers are using around these young and impressionable children. The foreman apologizes for the language and explains that these are not well educated and that they sometimes call a spade a spade . The owner replies, "No they don't. They call it a f******g shovel.

Par4QC Strictly speaking the ball wasn't "hit in the hole," it was hit INTO the hole.

I worked my way through college doing proofreading and editing. I still have the Chicago Manual of Style on my bookshelf. I may be the ultimate grammar nerd on this forum.

However, I don't have a problem with "I hit a hole in one." In fact, I hope I get to use that phrase sometime during this next golf season!

No I never shot a hole in one, nor did I hit a hole in one. I made three and each did go into the hole. I hit the ball and it was a good shot and thus I made a hole in one three times.
