How much for a drink? Cash or consequences??!!
Christmas Eve, 1971. Boss closed the shop early and someone went across the street and bought a few bottles of Vodka. We began mixing the Vodka with 7-Up out of the pop machine. When we ran out of 7-Up we began drinking it straight... I think. About 5:30, someone called my wife to come get me as I was in no shape to drive home. Heck, I couldn't even stand up.
My wife was 8 months pregnant with our first. We were to be at her parents for Christmas Eve at 7 p.m. Some of the guys got me into the car and she headed to our home. By the time we got home, I was upchucking all over myself. She ran a bathtub full of water and got me undressed and into the tub. Once I was somewhat cleaned up, she helped me get dressed and back into the car.
The 30 miles from our home to her parents had a number of stops so I could dry heave. We finally got to her parents home. I stumbled in the back door, into a bedroom, passed out and didn't know anything until the next morning. Needless to say, my wife's parents... really good people... and my wife were not please with me on Christmas Day!!!!!!
I was told that day the incident was my first strike. She said there would not be a third strike. If I ever pulled something like that again, she was promising me it would be last of our marriage. We've been married 51 years and I've never drank alcohol since Christmas Eve 1971.
