August 2012.
Family and I set off from NJ in our Jeep Commander. Stopped one night in Williamsburg, VA, then drove to my brother's house just east of Atlanta. Spent the night there, then left bright and early the next morning @ 0615 EDT and arrived in Abilene, TX at 2315 CDT (after a ~2-3 hour stop at Barksdale AFB, LA). The next day, we drove to Carlsbad, NM where we stayed 2 nights and saw the caverns on our one full day. From there, we drove to Sedona, AZ and spent 6 nights in the Wyndham resort. While we were there, I met up with ~10 guys from the Jeep forum I was frequenting at the time and went our our own Jeep tour around the Sedona area. We saw the Pink Jeeps, but it was nice to be in our own Jeep and be with friends vs being with strangers. We went to the Grand Canyon while we were staying in Sedona and went as far west at the Hoover Dam. After our stay at Sedona, we headed back east and stopped for 2 nights in Moab, UT where I took the wife's Commander through Hell's Revenge. She and the little girl (5 years old at the time) were scared so I took them back after ~1/4 mile into the trail and went back and finished it with the boys. After Moab, we headed to Colorado Springs where we stayed 2 nights with a buddy that I was stationed with in Guam. After that, one night in a Days Inn in Columbia, MO (don't EVER stay there... if it's the only place with vacancy, then sleep in your vehicle!) and on to Charleston, WV where we stopped to see my Papa. He was getting up there in age and my dad was putting him in a nursing home. He passed away the very next month so I'm thinking that he was likely just waiting to see us one last time. After a couple nights in the Charleston area, we drove back to NJ.
All told, we did 6912 (+/-) miles in 19 days. It was a long, but very fun trip. The kids were tired of riding and I was tired of driving... for a while. Still to this day, I'd almost prefer driving instead of flying, if time allows.
