mikeintopeka - I'm now turning this into a 'course review'. I ended up playing in the cold weather (upper 40's with a cold breeze off the gulf) on Galveston Island @ Moody Gardens Golf Course on my trip. I had a fun time despite the layers of clothing and gloves after joining a couple of 'good old boys' on my round.
I understand MGGC has been ranked one of the top muni courses in Texas and based on that I'd say it is over rated. The fairways were generously wide, the greens medium to large in size with a lot of subtle breaks, and numerous fairway and greenside bunkers full of new sand (not taken care of by jerks that had played sometime earlier that apparently are too good to hold a rake but thats not the course's fault). Had I not been playing with someone that had played it often to offer some target tips, I'd been lost a couple of times with strange routing and poor signage. There is water that comes into play on at least 2/3 of the holes and that gets monotonous. I may also be not giving them enough credit post hurricane reclamation as I'm sure the course was covered by salt water 6 months ago. I'd play it again in-season to see how the course is groomed when the grass is growing and the tee boxes are thick.
