I had a laminated Spalding Molitor 5wood that I used quite well back in the early 90's when I first started playing ('91-'92). The results weren't always great, but the feel and muted sound of the ball coming off the center of the club face on the good strikes always stuck with me.
Not sure if they're still around, but Louisville Golf had quite a large footprint in the persimmon/hickory golf club business back in the day. Might be worth checking into if the retro endeavor is something you're serious about.

But it also looks like they're holding the same line as far as pricing with today's modern equipment. Of course, there's a lot more attention to detail and overall craftsmanship given the product.
