Although a majority of courses maintain a hush-hush attitude as it relates to greens being punched and aerated, I am reminded of an instance earlier this year, when, I received a call on my cellphone from a local course staff member who was calling me to inform me that despite my booked tee time with them several days later - they were planning to do a subtle aeration of their greens a few days prior to my tee time.
They informed me that if I wanted to cancel - they completely understood, but wanted to make me aware of the course conditions.
Imagine the shock of actually having a course calling me to inform me that the conditions of their greens might not be to my liking a few days afterward when I was scheduled to play there....
I thanked them for the call, and rescheduled. And I rewarded them by booking a tee time two weeks later (their greens were excellent) and also brought a group of guys there to play a month later as well.
Mahoning Valley Country Club is the name of the facility. Fun little golf course. Excellent greens. The place became public back in the early 2000's after their membership dissolved, and has gone through two different ownerships since. The current ownership is doing a phenomenal job, and despite it being a low-end price-point - the course is indeed a bargain to play. ($30 w/cart, $25 w/cart for seniors).
So if you find yourself in Northeast PA and wanting to play a round of golf - give them a call.
I make it a point to promote those courses that go the extra mile to afford their customers an enjoyable golf experience.
