What are they like at your course(s)?

I play several different courses throughout the season, and without fail, the tee boxes at ALL are just terrible. Slanted. Up. Down. Sideways. Rounded, like little hills. Uneven, to the point one leg is lower than the other, even if you try several different areas. Nothing like a right-handed player standing on a tee that is slanted uphill(I mean severe slant), looking at a right-hand dogleg!!
Let's now mention the grass length similar to the rough down along the fairways! 3/12 " tee pushed in 1/2"-1", ball on top, and the damn grass is interfering with contact. Makes the Par 3 tees, esp., like hitting out of the rough, even with a tee.

Just how hard is it to make nice, flat, closely mowed tee boxes anyway!??

Might also mention something about those 'forward' tee boxes.....why are they not all in line with the regs.? A lot are set off to the side, forward, but directly in line with a tree line. wtf? Like..."you hit it short anyway, it won't be that far in!!" Bastages.

My God...yours are as bad as ours. " batters box" is what we call them. Tees in the same places so long there us no grass and you are now 2" below the ball.

Our 6th hole is the worst...and it has 5 places to put tees! The front tee is the flattest but hasn't been cut since Reagan was in office...that's where the women's tees are. The other Tees, not a level lie anywhere. Disgraceful. Guy today was cutting the tees with A regular Fuckin and lawnmower.

I have NO idea why they don't close all the tees except the front tee, level them and reseed them.

Half the time you see the grounds crew off in a spot in the woods cutting grass...for no reason...nobody has ever hit a ball where they are. Head scratcher.

My whole course is a dump.

not consistent re the grasses, some are good, some seem to be spotty and several different kinds of grass. They don't stager the tees enough leading to significant wear in areas especially on par 3,s. They are level, which is there best quality, and they mow them just barely enough to keep them up.

Snapped this pic a few weeks back of my friend teeing it up at a local public course about 30 minutes from where I live. It's quite obvious that the guy setting up the tee boxes that morning has never played golf!

I took this pic just before we moved the tee boxes forward to the level area... it's a huge tee box, so there was no reason for those markers to be where they were. I just told my buddy to set up to the ball so I could capture a more thorough view of how stupid it was. That was the 9th hole, and went in and showed the head pro as we were making the turn. He acted rather indifferent about the whole thing, so I guess there's just not much in the way of anyone in management there really giving a rat's ass. I mean - if the head pro doesn't seem to care - you can pretty much assume nobody from the greens staff does.

My club does a pretty good job all the way around with maintaining our course. We'll occasionally take it upon ourselves to adjust the tee markers if they're not somewhat straight across from each other, but other than that they're good. It helps that we have enough tee box depth and size for the staff to rotate the markers to prevent wear in one area, and they have divot mix boxes on just about every tee box of the shortest holes.

We're all (27 holes) good out here except 1 of the black tee on the west 9. It's settled and they haven't done anything to it. All fwys, approaches, grns collars and tees cut @ 1/2". Tees are constantly top dressed and seeded by hand. Bent grass everywhere except tees.

They generally suck around here, even the "nice" courses. Most of the time you're hitting from dirt, no grass. If there is grass then it's usually 2 inches tall. There's one course that cut boxes into a hillside for one particular hole. The problem is they didn't give you enough room to swing the club. On almost every tee box for that hole you hit the hill behind you in your backswing.

This is one of my favorites at a local muni. A tall tree 75 yards from the tee box in the middle of the fairway on a par 4. I have to use an 8 iron or aim either side in the rough.

I'd be comfortable hitting hybrid with R to L, but I do hit the ball high.

Rickochet 75 yards out? That's far enough to driver over, I'd think. Maybe a 3wd.

Rickochet - I think I'm remembering correctly that #13 is a Par 5 on "The Bull" @ Boone's Trace near Richmond, KY that has a big tree maybe 150 yards off the tee in the middle of a narrow fairway. One time I hit a pretty 'stinger' with a long iron that went under the branches that set me up nicely for my 2nd shot. Another time I tried to fly it over the top with a 5 wood and the limbs caught it and it kicked off to the right into the long weeds.

I think it is a local ordinance that anyone building tee boxes in our area must be inebriated.

Yes I play. I will soon be 68 and been playing since 1962. I am a low ball hitter with no hook in my bag an no fade I can depend on.

My beef with tee boxes in general is they are not well maintained. Often hard and lacking grass. Most courses could do better despite the traffic.

Generally, our course is (and has been for years) in fine shape for a small town muni but the tee boxes have always been terrible. I worked on the grounds crew (greens keeper) for three years in high school and another year after my freshman year of college and they were bad that far back (1965-1968). They suffer from all of the problems mentioned by others here. Back about 7-8 years ago the then club president and grounds superintendent said they were going to start to fix the tee boxes. They made a decent start but, as always at our course, we got a lot of rain and the course flooded. This required money to be spent for other, more pressing repairs. With the general down turn in golf (and our dwindling membership) I don't foresee anything being done with them either. A long course changing revision of a hole or two that was approved also about 7-8 years ago will also be a casualty of financial shortfalls as well.

Rickochet I was goofing in the "do you even lift, bro?" gag that is prevalent on the interweb. You're too good! You didn't even consider the "how did it possibly go that far left?!" shot!

Two weeks ago a fairly skilled friend of mine was left of the wide fairway, and also left of the adjacent very wide fairway. Probably went 240 forward and 180 left. If he aimed way right it's the perfect shot on that tee box! I'm sure he'd prefer to never ever hit that shot again, though.

Natpharm My course has several dog legs and two are left to right. So often I have to hit a hybrid or 5 wood and fade it around trees. I also have to aim at a green side bunker. This is an easy shot for me most of the time, but occasionally I hit it dead straight and end up in the bunker. I feel your pain.

Indeed it was. What was even more horrible was the indifferent attitude from the pro after I showed him the pic from my phone.

In this day and age of golf courses reeling from lack of play revenues, it would seem that stuff like this (stuff that doesn't impact more labor costs) would be high on the priority list to get right.

I guess not.
