A friend is looking for a telescope for 12 year old grandson for Christmas. As usual there is too much info available online. Could someone point me in the right direction on how to select one for a beginner 12 year old. I don't have a clue what her budget is.
Is it for looking at the stars or checking out the girl next-door?

I'm sure Granny has the stars in mind but he might have other plans. 😛
There is a wealth of info here with many links in threads to more than you want to read about. https://www.cloudynights.com/forum/57-beginners-forum/
A smaller newtonian or dobsonian is the typical advice. Binoculars are talked about too but maybe not for a 12 year old.

Thanks for the info. And, yes too much information. And, I am guessing the kid will look at the moon twice then it will go into the closet to gather dust.
Here's a pretty decent refractor scope for 50 bucks. Better quality than a cheap department store scope. Price is Right and lots of good reviews.

This one is portable and includes a backpack for storage and transport. http://bit.ly/2yJual6
