We live in a self-absorbed, attention-deficit society nowadays, where the people next to them, behind them, in front of them, in a metal box traveling 60+ miles-per-hour, is less important than a stupid Facebook notification... as if someone "liking" or commenting on one's trivial, "look at me and how important my life is" social status via the internet is more important than their (or others') safety.
I mean - look at the example I posted. A woman with her cellphone plastered close to her face ended up suffering serious injuries because of her stupidity and negligence! Further proof is not needed. Thankfully this woman wasn't traveling in a car on a roadway and putting dozens of other lives in danger.
If our best and greatest minds can send a man to the moon - we have the ability to create the type of technology that automatically disables cellphone use while a motorized vehicle is moving. The technology is there, it is available.
I preach to my children daily that the most dangerous thing they will ever do each day is get behind the wheel of a vehicle and take to the roads used by other "distracted" drivers, and to always be on the lookout for those not paying attention.
It doesn't have to be this way. And whatever local/state/federal regulation is devised to alleviate such a burden upon society is something that I would gladly get behind and support 110%.
Keeping in mind that it isn't the cellphone technology to blame, but society's inability to police itself and show enough discipline and awareness to understand that texting-while-driving isn't just a social faux pas, but a very real, potential federal offense that could easily take the life of someone else.
