Acer XV Thriver Mini

I am struggling with the driver and currently hit a Cleveland Launcher 13* 3 wood and hit it almost as far as the driver and sometimes even farther. I know this doesn't make sense? So I was thinking about trying the thriver mini since it is bigger than the Cleveland.

My question is has anyone used the Acer XV Thriver Mini? How does it compare to a driver in length, accuracy, etc? How is to hit from the deck? Could this replace the driver and 3 wood or is a waste? Is it easier to hit because of the shorter shaft? Would I be better with the standard Thriver? Thanks for any input.

The Acer XV Mini is a nice head. It probably has the footprint of a 380cc driver, or thereabouts. But it's much shallower. I can hit it off a good lie on the deck, or if it's sitting up in the rough. If you mostly hit the 3W off the tee, then it could replace both driver and 3W. The larger footprint doesn't bother me off the deck, though I know others don't like it.

I've always had some trouble with drivers, too. I've been using a Yamaha D201-S 11* with a Matrix 7321 shaft and when I tee it lower, it's been performing for me. Teeing it high and playing it further forward seems to be what throws me off. A higher lofted driver which you can tee a little lower might help you.

This is in head I've been wanting to buy, but I hit my rbz 3wd so damn good I can't seem to pull the trigger on it....it is the original mini!

I know it's inevitable but no shakes yet!

I borrowed one of those in a scramble today for a few par 5 holes. Used it off the turf for 2nd shot. I did not launch it very high, but holy shit that face is hot.

I've used the XV Thriver mini and it is a very solid clubhead. While I used it primarily as a tee club I did have success with it out of the rough with a good lie. I never tried to hit it off the deck but that's because I don't feel comfortable hitting 3 woods off the deck (I don't even carry a 3 wood anymore). I will say that the XV Thriver mini's profile does appear to be more apt to being able to be hit off the deck than something like Wishon's 919F/D which has a taller face. I didn't see much loss of distance with the XV Thriver mini compared to an actual driver but I did find a lot more fairways and my distance was more consistent. I did eventually switch back to the XS Thriver because I prefer a larger head from the tee. If you decide to go with the mini instead of a full size (like the DTG one in Rickochet's post) let me know and I can get some pictures for you if you are interested in a used one.

I say if you are comfortable with hitting a 3 wood of the tee then keep it and forget about a mini thriver as the majority will have issues with hitting a mini off tight lies or rough.

Personally, I have canned a driver and use a Swing Science FC-One a fairway wood 43" off the tee (as long for me as a driver) and also hit it well off tight lies in fairway. Add to that I am straighter and as long as a driver. When, you drop down into the high 80's for your longest club head speed the amount of distance is negligible. Also most hot fairway woods even with a smaller head have that bulge/roll advantage that most drivers can't give you unless it's old persimmon.

Scott, can you elaborate on the bulge and roll advantage? I feel that the 460 drivers don't have enough bulge. I'm interested if that is what you are saying.

DonM Known as gear effect especially on older persimmon and laminated maple heads. I notice it also on smaller fairway woods less on GRT Wishon driver faces and other Wishon GRT heads.

Everyone is different. Some people hit their 3W as far as their driver. But if their driver was optimized for them, it would go farther, even at a 3W loft. That's my experience anyway. I'm sure it's due to better launch conditions from the big head's COG and forgiveness.

I have a Ping 1st gen Rapture which is a huge Ti 3W. I think it goes a bit farther than a regular 3W.

Def hot, it has that hicor feel more than any other club I've played....stock shaft is a real POS though, needs to be yanked immediately.
