Now.....there are EIGHT AMERICANS who have come up one short of a career Grand Slam. How many

Hey, just giving you some good-natured ribbing. 😉

Looking at your list, the two that stand out to me are Watson (no PGA) and obviously Mickelson coming oh-so-close in the US Open with six 2nd-place finishes, but incapable of getting it done. Unfortunately I feel that his debacle at Winged Foot back in 2006 left such a deep scar for him that he's never been able to shake it since.

But here's the interesting thing about Mickelson. He turns 50 on June 16th, 2020. 48 hours later, the US Open begins at (you guessed it) Winged Foot.

Another interesting tidbit: Should Mickelson win, he would officially become the 2nd oldest player to ever win a major championship. The irony? He would complete the career grand slam, coming up short of the oldest winner (Sam Snead) by 2 years, 10 months and 6 days, in the very major that proved to be the only cloud over Slamming Sammy's otherwise brilliant career.

The only question is whether Phil will remain competitive long enough to earn his chance at redemption three years from now.

Yeah, I hate to see him miss this year, but he's obviously doing the right thing for his family. It has to be frustrating for all of those guys to think about the "one that got away!" Trevino was never close in the Masters, Palmer never was close in the PGA......but Snead blew a couple of Opens (in fact, later in life he admitted that there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't think about how he could have won the Open!), Watson was in a sudden death playoff for the PGA one year, and then there's Phil.....Winged Foot has to wear on his mind.....!

People can talk shit about Phil all they want, about how he's phony, flakey, etc... but he garners an enormous amount of admiration from the fans, and part of the reason is because he seems to have his priorities straight as it relates to his family.

The other reason is pretty much fact: if Tiger Woods didn't exist, most educated minds would consider him the best player in the game over the past 2 decades.

I've been a Phil fan for a long time, and I sincerely hope he can remain competitive over the next 2-3 years to get his coveted grand slam. Not obtaining the Grand Slam won't define his career, but it would certainly add to his already-impressive legacy. But it won't be easy.

If Tiger did not exist I think Phil would have won at least three more Majors and more than a few more Tour events as well. Being the second best player in a two decade span is not anything to be ashamed of and I am sure Phil is quite proud of his accomplishments. He is my wife's favorite player by far and we have some good discussions during those twenty years. I am a Tiger Woods fan and have been since his amateur days. I also would love to see Phil finally win his US Open.
