Stu1961 it would be foolish to plead guilty at an initial appearance. Some courts won't even accept a guilty plea at that stage. It's common practice to preserve ones rights and go through the court process. There wouldnt even be enough time to consult with a lawyer and fully digest all of the ramifications of a guilty plea....
Plus more.investigation, etc. may need to take place, i.e. processing.of evidence , interviewing witnesses., etc. Victims rjghts will need tk be complied wjth as well. A lot more goes on then what people think. What may seem like cut and dry,, often is not. Facts and what can be proven in court vs. Public opinion.
Re TW I hope he is serious about "treatment" vs going.to sit at a posh retreat and making it look like hes doing something meaningful.
