I was an Independent from 1973 to 2020. But havenât voted for a Republican since the early 1990âs. Lived in Massachusetts until 2002. Actually campaigned for Massachusetts Republican governor Bill Weld.
You canât be a far right wing nutjob Republican and win in Massachusetts. You have to be sane. We switched to the Democratic Party in 2020 here in Florida to vote for Biden in the primary.
Back in the late 50âs early 60âs the Republican Party had to deal with the nutty John Birch Society. They were the tin foil hat nutjobs back then.
William F. Buckley Jr. who was the conservative leader of the Republican Party back then kicked the crazy Birchers out of the Party. He knew they were bad for the party.
Fast forward. The far right equivalent of the John Bitch Society was let in the tent. They wanted their vote. Now theyâve taken over the party. Basically the inmates have taken over the asylum.
This Republican Party isnât your grandfatherâs Republican Party. Theyâve been hijacked. Many of the sane Republicans have left the party.
Now theyâve become a cult under Trump. Cross Trump and youâll get primaried and you and your family will be threatened. Trump rules by fear as all authoritarians do.
My hope is this dalliance with an ignorant, dangerous, demagogue authoritarian wannabe will come to pass. Similar to the communist Red Scare with Joe McCarthy back in the early 1950âs.
But we shall see. Trump has and is doing a lot of damage. May take years to undo all the damage. People donât realized once you lose your democracy itâs hard to get it back.
Read up on Viktor Orban of Hungary. Very similar to Trump (Trump loves Orban). Orban won then lost and then won again, but hasnât left office since. Has taken over the media in Hungary etc..
Would be like Fox News being the state run media here. Hungary has experienced democratic backsliding, a much weaker judiciary and much more corruption. Theyâre now considered an illiberal democracy. Basically a democracy in name only.
This is why millions of us will be out protesting this Saturday across the country. Batshit crazy canât be the standard for the Presidency.
