Push or Pull

Okay folks…Sunday Opinion Poll:

When working on shafts with adapters do you think it is better to “Push” them off or “Pull” them off? Or are you in the camp that it does not matter?

I have done it both ways and all was fine…but just looking for experienced input & justified opinions.

Aluminum-aluminum is going to do no damage.
As far as that rubber ferrule goes, the heat necessary for removal is going to distort it using either method. (voice of experiences)

I've always pulled them off,less chance of damaging the adaptor.
And Ping uses those funky rubber ferrules that forces a pulling motion if
you want to try save/reuse that ferrule.

Push...... I've been too lazy to get the right size washer to pull....😬

I definitely think PULL is more adapter-friendy.

I use the same size fender washer for all adapter pulls. Sometimes I need a different screw size depending on the adapter but I just keep that screw in an adapter so I remember. Also if I pull I can often times save the ferrule. If you push it’s almost certain you’ll crush it from being soft.

The old Taylormade adapters had a plastic sleeve with the markings on it so the only way to save it was to coat it with Welders Putty.

I am now in the camp of pulling the adapter off. I have Pings and saving that rubber ferrule is paramount. Haven’t lost one yet.

I pull them off, but that's easier with the hydraulic setup I have.

If the adapter were flat at end I would opt to push it off but they all tend to be aluminum including the ferrule m, making it less than practical to do it that way (less the Ping rubber ferrule)... so pull with the adapter saver kit/screw/washer is the ticket. I've seen no ill effect of pulling the adapter this way, initially having some concern for the threads in the adapter.

This was me initially as well…but like you, I have yet to encounter an issue

I don't worry about the ferrules, plastic or rubber. They are cheap enough & I keep supplies on hand of all of them.

The only time pulling wouldn't be acceptable, or possible, is when the fork will not accept the width of the adapter. I found this out when making the pullers and had to redo the fork width.

Par4QC you don’t have to worry about the fork width. Basically when I use your brothers hydraulic I have a screw with a fat fender washer going onto the adapter. The adapter itself is on the clamp side of the fork, only the screw is going though the fork with the center washer on the other side of the fork

Typhoon The fork on the ones I made is a lot thicker. Why I had to redo them. Adapter was inside the fork(pic above).

Par4QC I use that clip thing that has the different shaft sizes when I was pushing heads off. But here are 2 angles of using the screw and washer

Par4QC The welded piece where you turned the crank to tighten the shaft in snapped early on while tightening.
No big deal, I brace the unit against the bench vise and use the vise to hold the shaft.
